Identify the Georgian citizenship restoration route, organise former-status and termination records, and prepare an application or review a response within an agreed scope.

First distinguish restoration under Article 18, temporary restoration under Article 32², retention and other naturalisation routes. Article 32² lets specified former citizens who lost Georgian citizenship through acquiring foreign citizenship apply to the Agency before 1 January 2027, excluding that date. This is not the deadline for every citizenship route. Eligibility and outcome require individual assessment.

The right route starts by assessing current law, facts, documents and deadlines together. This page provides a practical framework; an individual strategy is formed only after a confidential case assessment.

Procedure

How the matter is managed

  1. 01

Identify the requested work: route assessment, application preparation or response review

  2. 02

Inventory former-citizenship and termination records; flag unknown dates and missing records for later agreed review

  3. 03

Check the applicable route, test or exception and, for Article 32², the requirement to apply before 1 January 2027

  4. 04

Confirm the filing channel, translation, certification, representation and any personal-appearance requirement before applying

  5. 05

Keep the filing acknowledgement, review the response and next deadline, and agree any follow-up work separately

Documents

Initial checklist

  • Categories of official, archival or registration records of former citizenship
  • Termination or loss decision, or corresponding record, if available
  • Categories of name-change or civil-status records needed to connect the evidence
  • General information about any previous application, authority response and known deadline; copies only later through an agreed channel

Risks

Common mistakes

  • Confusing restoration, retention and other naturalisation routes
  • Treating 1 January 2027 as an eligible Article 32² filing day or relying on the Agency's older deadline
  • Replacing missing records with assumptions or assuming every step can be completed remotely

Typical scenario

From facts to an action plan

A client approaches with documents, conflicting information or a close deadline. We first identify the legal position, downside risk and priority action, then create an evidence and procedure plan. This illustration is not a past result or a promise of outcome.

Official sources

Check the current rule

Checked on 6 October 2026 only for restoration/retention route distinctions, the Article 32² deadline and relevant application channels. The deadline follows the current Organic Law, not the older temporary-route date on the Agency's English page. This is not a fresh review of the whole guide or Agency page; individual conditions, forms and fees require separate checking.

FAQ

Direct answers to practical questions

Answers are general and do not replace individual legal advice.

01Are restoration and retention the same procedure?+

No. First establish whether citizenship ended and which legal route fits the records. Article 18 restoration, the Article 32² temporary route and retention are not interchangeable.

02What should I share in the initial enquiry?+

Briefly state the help needed, application stage, known deadline and categories of available or pending records. Do not include document numbers or copies; a document-review channel will be agreed later.

03Can I apply from abroad?+

The Agency identifies the relevant Georgian diplomatic mission or consular office as a channel for applicants abroad. Check the channel and requirements for the particular route first. This does not mean a test, signature, originals or every step can be completed remotely.
