Restoration of Georgian Citizenship: Documents

First distinguish restoration under Article 18, temporary restoration under Article 32², retention and other naturalisation routes. Article 32² lets specified former citizens who lost Georgian citizenship through acquiring foreign citizenship apply to the Agency before 1 January 2027, excluding that date. This is not the deadline for every citizenship route. Eligibility and outcome require individual assessment.

Answer first

Restoration of Georgian Citizenship

Identify the Georgian citizenship restoration route, organise former-status and termination records, and prepare an application or review a response within an agreed scope.

Before acting, verify the legal basis, deadline and consistency of the documents. This guide is a preparation framework, not an individual legal opinion.

Step-by-step process

  1. Identify the requested work: route assessment, application preparation or response review
  2. Inventory former-citizenship and termination records; flag unknown dates and missing records for later agreed review
  3. Check the applicable route, test or exception and, for Article 32², the requirement to apply before 1 January 2027
  4. Confirm the filing channel, translation, certification, representation and any personal-appearance requirement before applying
  5. Keep the filing acknowledgement, review the response and next deadline, and agree any follow-up work separately

Required-document checklist

  • Categories of official, archival or registration records of former citizenship
  • Termination or loss decision, or corresponding record, if available
  • Categories of name-change or civil-status records needed to connect the evidence
  • General information about any previous application, authority response and known deadline; copies only later through an agreed channel

Authorities, translation and representation

The specific procedure determines the authority, personal-appearance requirement, power of attorney, notarisation, certified translation, apostille or legalisation. A foreign document should be assessed under both its country of origin and the receiving authority's rules.

Key risks and common mistakes

  • Confusing restoration, retention and other naturalisation routes
  • Treating 1 January 2027 as an eligible Article 32² filing day or relying on the Agency's older deadline
  • Replacing missing records with assumptions or assuming every step can be completed remotely

Checking recent changes

Checked on 6 October 2026 only for restoration/retention route distinctions, the Article 32² deadline and relevant application channels. The deadline follows the current Organic Law, not the older temporary-route date on the Agency's English page. This is not a fresh review of the whole guide or Agency page; individual conditions, forms and fees require separate checking.
