Wallonia’s 2027 work-permit salary thresholds: why the region, category and remuneration structure matter

The 2027 thresholds were highlighted on October 20. Employers should use Wallonia’s official table and distinguish salary eligibility from a complete permit approval.

A future threshold, with an earlier official publication

An international immigration update on 20 October 2026 highlighted Wallonia’s 2027 salary thresholds. The regional authority’s table was itself updated on 8 October and applies from 1 January through 31 December 2027. This is advance planning information, not a claim that the new amounts already govern every October application.

The distinction matters for contracts negotiated now but starting next year. The employer should identify the relevant filing, employment and renewal rules before deciding which threshold applies. A headline quoting one Belgian salary figure can be misleading because regional jurisdiction and permit category matter.

Use the official category-specific amounts

The Walloon authority’s table lists annual gross thresholds of €54,709 for highly qualified workers and €43,767 for qualifying workers under 30. It gives €91,275 for managerial functions and €70,741 for the general EU Blue Card category, with €56,593 for its specified junior category. These figures should not be applied indiscriminately to other regions or categories.

A salary above one threshold does not establish that the job meets that category’s other requirements. Actual duties, qualifications, employment terms and the competent authority must be checked. Calling a role “executive” in a contract is not a substitute for demonstrating that the applicable legal category fits.

Gross remuneration needs a defensible calculation

Prepare a schedule showing the contract’s remuneration components, payment frequency and any conditions attached to them. A headline total that includes discretionary bonuses, reimbursements or benefits may not be equivalent to the salary counted for immigration purposes. Obtain confirmation of the treatment of each component under the relevant rules.

Consider a proposed package with a lower guaranteed salary and a large performance bonus. If the bonus is uncertain, the employer should not assume that the maximum possible annual income meets a mandatory floor. The safer analysis is to identify what is legally guaranteed, what is actually payable and what the authority permits to be counted.

Part-time work and ordinary wage protections remain relevant

The regional guidance also addresses remuneration in relation to working time and the guaranteed monthly minimum. Any permitted proportional calculation must be read with those safeguards. A reduced working schedule should not be used as a shortcut to a salary calculation that ignores a separate minimum-wage requirement.

A multinational employer should also decide which region is competent for the proposed work arrangement. An office address, payroll entity and actual workplace may not always point to the same answer. Obtain the correct jurisdictional assessment before relying on a table selected only because its amount is lower.

Planning a move from Georgia

A Georgian citizen negotiating a Belgian role should coordinate the employment authorisation, residence procedure and travel timetable. Georgian residence or a Schengen short-stay entitlement does not itself authorise Belgian employment. Preserve the final offer and the documents used for the application so later changes can be assessed consistently.

The broader principle is also visible in our UK sponsor-change analysis: a commercial employment decision and an immigration permission are connected but separate. A compliant salary is one part of the file, not the complete approval.

  • Confirm the competent region and exact permit category.
  • Check the threshold applicable to the relevant date.
  • Document countable guaranteed gross remuneration and working time.
  • Review renewal and contract changes before relying on an earlier calculation.

The published table gives employers a useful budgeting reference. The legal work is to connect that reference to the actual role, contract and procedure.
