UK permit-free festivals: January 2027 application deadline
Organisers seeking inclusion for April 2027–April 2028 events must apply by January 29. Listing supports qualifying paid performances but does not waive all visa rules.

The next application cycle
Guidance updated on 28 October 2026 sets 29 January 2027 as the application deadline for organisers seeking permit-free festival listing for events starting between April 2027 and April 2028. Already listed festivals will be asked about notable changes and relevant evidence if they wish to remain. Official source.
Listing allows an event to invite artists or entertainers without issuing a sponsorship certificate and exceptionally permits payment under the Standard Visitor route. It does not remove every performer’s visa, entry or activity requirements.
Evidence of an established festival
New entrants must have existed for at least three years, attracted at least 15,000 people at each of the last three festivals and expect at least that audience at the forthcoming event. The guidance also requires at least 15 non-British or non-Irish performers at each previous festival and invited for 2027–28.
The evidence includes programmes, attendance and ticket records, performer information, press coverage and relevant local authority material. A large online following does not by itself establish the audience figures specified in the guidance.
Separate the event from each performer
Organisers should check the official festival list, the event dates and the proposed engagement. An application for future inclusion is not confirmation that listing has been granted.
Performers should separately identify their travel-document requirements, the nature of their work and the basis for payment. An invitation that simply says “festival” may leave important questions unanswered about which event is listed and what activities are proposed.
Prepare a traceable application
Hypothetically, an organiser’s attendance spreadsheet combines three festivals with unrelated concerts. Reconcile the records to each qualifying festival and explain the counting method before relying on the total.
Allow time to obtain historical programmes and supporting records before January 29. Keep the submitted evidence and official correspondence. Meeting the documentary checklist supports assessment; it does not guarantee listing or admission for every invited artist.
Legal check date
Sources and law checked on 28 October 2026. Later developments are not reflected automatically. Application of the rules depends on the individual facts.
