UK digital reporting: responses, location and support

Updated guidance explains personal reporting, location sharing and technical support. Digital reporting does not grant permission to stay or remove other conditions.

Reporting does not change immigration status

Home Office guidance updated on 22 October 2026 explains digital reporting both as an immigration-bail condition and as a reporting requirement outside bail. Completing a digital report does not grant permission to stay or remove other conditions. Official source.

The individual message states when a response is required. People must respond themselves; a lawyer or other representative cannot acknowledge the message on their behalf. Any separate face-to-face reporting, work or study restriction remains relevant.

Check the app and contact details

Registration in the UK Immigration Engagement and Compliance app must use the same mobile number used for digital reporting. Once app reporting begins, text messages stop, while email continues if the Home Office holds an email address.

Keep contact details current and check notifications. A change of phone or an assumption that a representative is receiving messages can create a practical gap even where the person intends to comply.

What location sharing means

If asked to share location as part of reporting, the guidance requires the person to allow access. It says the Home Office receives location at that moment, rather than continuously tracking the device, and stores location data for up to 90 days.

That statement concerns location data in this process. It should not be expanded into a claim about the retention of every immigration record or every technology used by the authorities.

Report technical difficulties promptly

Hypothetically, a broken phone prevents a person from opening the reporting message. Keep a record of the problem and promptly use the official support details in the guidance. The guidance does not state that a technical problem automatically extends a deadline.

Read the actual reporting notice together with any bail conditions. If assistance is needed to manage communications, explain that through the designated channel. Preserve replies and evidence of attempted compliance without asking another person to submit a response as if they were you.
