UK Budget plans skilled-worker salary and job-search changes

The 28 October Budget proposes salary reforms for spring 2027 and longer job-search time for some workers. Current visa conditions still govern today’s cases.

A policy announcement for future implementation

The UK Budget of 28 October 2026 sets out changes to skilled-worker salary requirements for spring 2027 and a longer curtailment period for some highly skilled workers during 2027. It does not give every sponsored worker six extra months from today. Applicants and employers need the implementing rules before applying the new arrangements to an individual case. Official source.

Salary changes move in different directions

The announced package would lower occupation-specific minimums from median wages to the 25th percentile, while uprating the general threshold using 2026 wage data. It also provides for annual wage-data updates, a single new-entrant discount and removal of the PhD discount. A lower occupation-specific figure therefore cannot be read as a universal reduction in the salary required.

Longer time after employment ends

The Budget says the highest-skilled workers would be able to receive up to six months, with duration depending on time spent in the previous highly paid job. It does not supply a universal entitlement for all visa holders. The Treasury announcement presents this as part of its future talent package.

Employer planning now

Build two separate records: the requirements applicable to a current sponsorship decision and the assumptions used for a possible 2027 hire. Keep job duties, pay components and start dates explicit. An offer should not promise eligibility merely because one announced threshold appears favourable; the complete applicable route and any transition provisions will matter.

Hypothetical example

A researcher receives an offer intended to start in 2027 and expects a PhD discount to make the salary sufficient. The announced removal of that discount could change the calculation even if an occupation-specific minimum falls. The sensible next step is to revisit the proposed package when the implementing rules are available, rather than treating the Budget headline as an approval.

Protect existing deadlines

Someone whose employment has already ended should follow the actual Home Office notice and current permission. Waiting for a future reform is not a substitute for addressing a live expiry or curtailment deadline. This analysis concerns the UK’s announced policy; it neither changes Georgian immigration law nor promises that a particular worker will benefit.
