Spain’s checks on arrivals from Italy reach their scheduled expiry: what changes for Schengen travellers
Spain’s published order ran through October 22 and provides for automatic expiry unless a fresh justified extension is adopted. Visa, stay and document conditions continue.

The legal endpoint in the Spanish order
Spain’s Order INT/1033/2026 extended specified internal air and sea border controls on passenger arrivals from Italy until 24:00 on 22 October 2026. Article 2 provides that expiry lifts those controls automatically and that a further extension requires a new reasoned decision. The scheduled endpoint is the current development analysed here; the order itself was published earlier.
For a journey on 23 October, travellers should still check whether a fresh measure or operational notice has been issued. The Spanish instrument establishes its own temporal scope. It should not be used alone to prove the position at an Italian border, another internal border or an external Schengen crossing.
The scope is tied to the arriving route
The original Order INT/846/2026 identifies flights and maritime passenger services whose last departure airport or port is in Italy. That scope matters when a journey contains several legs. A traveller’s nationality and the country where the whole holiday began are not substitutes for identifying the relevant arriving service.
Consider a Georgian traveller arriving in Spain after a stay in Italy. The removal of this particular systematic control does not change the basis on which that person entered Schengen or the length of lawful stay available. The travel record should still establish where and when the external border was crossed.
A control expiry does not reset the stay clock
The Schengen Borders Code distinguishes internal-border arrangements from external admission conditions. Crossing from Italy to Spain does not itself create a new allowance of short-stay days. Any applicable visa, residence permission and short-stay calculation need to be assessed on their own terms.
Keep a valid travel document and evidence relevant to the actual permission. A person should not assume that fewer systematic checks mean no lawful police checks or no obligation to establish status. A carrier may also perform identity or security checks that serve a different purpose from the temporary border control.
Plan for the whole itinerary
Travellers connecting through a non-Schengen country need a separate transit assessment. Returning to Georgia likewise requires the appropriate passport and, where relevant, valid Georgian permission. An internal-border announcement is only one part of a lawful travel plan.
If disruption or a document dispute occurs, preserve the itinerary, boarding records and the requirement identified by the carrier or authority. A compensation question depends on the applicable legal and contractual basis. The expiry of a border measure does not automatically establish that every delay or refusal was unlawful.
What to verify for the departure date
- Check for a later order or official operational update.
- Identify the last departure airport or port for the Spanish arrival.
- Calculate stay under the actual visa or residence position.
- Keep identity, entry and onward-travel evidence accessible.
