Sakpatenti Training Centre in Kutaisi: Why Training Does Not Change the Patent Granting Procedure
A new intellectual property training space has opened. Key questions for an inventor are novelty, application priority, and the distribution of rights with an employer.

According to Imedi's report of 9 October 2026, Sakpatenti's Intellectual Property Training and Retraining Centre has opened in Kutaisi Technology Hub. The opening is also confirmed by official information from the Imereti State Representative's Administration. The creation of a training space does not imply automatic patent issuance or professional qualification for all participants.
What must an invention satisfy?
Article 12 of the Patent Law links patentability to novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability. Information publicly available before the priority date is important when assessing the state of the art. Therefore, before exhibiting a prototype, making a public presentation, or publishing a detailed description online, the issue of filing an application and confidentiality should be evaluated.
A training certificate itself cannot confirm the novelty of an invention. Research should include relevant technical material and previously published applications. The use of exceptions in the law requires specific disclosure and documentation; promising the same result for all public showings is incorrect.
Are the inventor and the right to obtain a patent always the same person?
Article 19 grants the right to the inventor or their successor in title and establishes special rules for jointly created, service, or commissioned inventions. In the case of creation within the scope of employment, the contract with the employer may be crucial. Before starting a project, the contribution of authors, use of resources, applicant, and possible license should be clarified.
Does a Georgian patent apply worldwide?
According to WIPO's explanation, patent rights are territorial. This is an educational explanation and not a court decision. The international application procedure does not create a single global patent; protection in desired countries requires appropriate procedures. The centre facilitates knowledge acquisition, while the scope of individual protection is determined by the application, applicable law, and the granted patent.
