Right to Repair: What Europe’s New Repair Rules Mean for Consumers in Georgia
The EU right-to-repair directive began applying through national laws on 31 July 2026. How does Georgian law protect consumers from defective products and poor service?
Repair is becoming a legal competition issue
The EU right-to-repair directive began applying through Member State laws on 31 July 2026. The European Commission explains that manufacturers of certain repairable products may have to repair them within a reasonable time and for a reasonable price. Choosing repair during the legal guarantee can extend the guarantee by one additional year.
The directive is not automatically Georgian law, but it matters to Georgian importers, distributors, online shops and consumers buying from the EU. In Georgia, disputes are generally assessed under the contract, the Law on the Protection of Consumer Rights and product-safety rules.
What a Georgian consumer should do
Preserve the receipt, warranty card, delivery document, messages, photos or video and service-centre report. Put your request in writing: repair, replacement, price reduction or termination. If the service refuses, request the reason in writing. Do not hand over a product without a handover record.
Business risks
Online shops should clearly identify the seller, warranty, service terms, delivery and return process. Confusing the manufacturer’s and seller’s responsibilities can mislead consumers. Product-safety rules become especially important when a defect may threaten health or property.
The European rules raise expectations that products should be repairable, spare parts accessible and service transparent. Georgian businesses should review warranty policies, supplier contracts and product due diligence.
