New Zealand investors planning holiday travel: approval in principle is not the final resident visa
INZ’s October 15 reminder asks for early transfer and investment evidence. A complete financial trail matters more than a booked departure date.

A timely reminder about a two-stage process
On 15 October 2026 Immigration New Zealand asked people with approval in principle for Active Investor Plus or Parent Retirement Resident visas to submit transfer and investment evidence early if planning Christmas or summer travel. It expressly declined to guarantee a resident-visa decision before a booked departure.
The announcement does not introduce a new investment category or a universal filing deadline. It highlights the gap between an initial positive assessment and proving that the remaining conditions have been met. A flight booking does not close that gap.
Approval in principle leaves substantive work to do
The Active Investor Plus guidance distinguishes the initial approval from transferring and placing funds in acceptable investments. It also describes an application for a work visa to arrange those steps and separate temporary options for family members. Applicants should identify the permission actually held before travelling.
An investor may have sufficient wealth yet still have an incomplete immigration file. The issue can be the source, ownership, transfer route or acceptability of the investment. A bank’s willingness to accept a transfer is not equivalent to immigration approval of the funds or the asset in which they are placed.
Build a continuous and intelligible funds trail
INZ’s October reminder requests material explaining where funds were held, any temporary investments, currency conversion, transfer records and the eventual qualifying investment. A clear index and cover explanation can make a complex sequence understandable. They do not replace the underlying records.
For example, funds moving through several accounts may generate individually valid statements while leaving a missing link between the nominated assets and the amount received in New Zealand. Reconcile names, dates, currencies and amounts. Explain fees and conversion differences so the decision maker can follow the same funds through the chain.
Investment acceptability and investment merit are separate
An asset may be commercially attractive without qualifying for the chosen immigration category. Conversely, an eligible investment is not a guarantee of return or protection against loss. The immigration assessment should be kept distinct from the investor’s financial, tax and commercial due diligence.
Before committing funds, check the category, acceptable-investment criteria, holding period and any required evidence of ownership. If an intermediary promises guaranteed residence in exchange for purchasing a particular product, request the precise official basis. A sales brochure should not substitute for the programme instructions and the applicant’s approval letter.
Travel plans need a lawful alternative if a decision is pending
Where the resident visa will not be granted in time, INZ suggests considering other available visa options. The appropriate option depends on the intended activity and eligibility. A visitor permission should not be assumed to permit every task involved in running or managing an investment. Family members also need their own valid basis for travel.
For funds originating in Georgia, preserve bank and ownership records and arrange reliable translations where required. Consider tax residence and reporting separately in each relevant jurisdiction. Our Georgia policy-rate analysis addresses another distinct issue: how financing terms can differ from a central-bank headline.
- Read the individual approval-in-principle conditions and deadlines.
- Reconcile the complete source, transfer and investment evidence.
- Check the intended investment against the correct category.
- Confirm the visa held for the actual journey and activities.
Early, complete documentation improves the chance of a timely assessment. It cannot convert an intended travel date into an entitlement to a final resident visa.
