Ireland’s October 16 permit queues: why a processing date is neither a work permit nor an appeal deadline

Official processing dates differ sharply by permit type. Applicants and employers should plan around the correct queue while keeping work permission, immigration status and review deadlines separate.

The official snapshot

Ireland’s Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment published processing positions as of 16 October 2026. It was handling Critical Skills applications received on 7 October, new General Employment Permit applications from 11 September and other new applications, excluding the separately listed categories, from 19 August. New intra-company transfers had a separate 12 October position.

Renewals and reviews were further back: the table listed 28 July for the general renewal queue, 31 July for intra-company-transfer renewals and 28 April for reviews or appeals. These are receipt dates being processed, not promised decision dates or estimates that every applicant can convert into an identical waiting period.

Use the correct queue and a complete application

The official processing page says applications are processed in receipt order for the fully completed form and fee, where applicable. That qualification matters. An incomplete submission, request for information or incorrect category can affect the practical timetable, and a fast-moving queue does not establish that the underlying permit criteria are met.

An employer should therefore plan the proposed start date, recruitment steps and supporting documents together. The official permit guidance requires an application at least 12 weeks before the proposed employment start date. Where a Labour Market Needs Test applies, its advertisement requirements are a separate preparation stage. A short current queue is not a reason to ignore those requirements.

Employment permission and immigration permission differ

The Employment Permits Act 2024 provides the employment-permit framework. Depending on nationality and status, entry clearance and registration or residence permission must also be considered. An employment-permit application is not itself a visa, and the published queue does not authorise a person to begin working.

For a worker currently abroad, a sensible sequence is to confirm the permit route, receive the necessary decision and then complete the applicable travel and immigration steps. For a worker already in Ireland, any continuing work and residence rights during renewal must be established from the actual status and current official rules. They should not be inferred from the fact that the department has a backlog.

The review queue does not extend the review deadline

The General Employment Permit guidance describes a 28-day period to seek review of a refusal. The April processing position does not give a newly refused applicant months to file. The decision and applicable procedure should be examined promptly, including which defects can be addressed on review and which may require a fresh application.

Keep the refusal, receipt date, original submission and a reasoned response to each ground. If an employer’s proposed start date becomes unrealistic, agree a revised commercial plan without assuming it alters immigration conditions. Travelling to or waiting in Georgia also requires a separate lawful-stay assessment and reliable access to the Irish correspondence.

What the snapshot is useful for

  • Identify the exact permit type and whether the case is new, renewal or review.
  • Use receipt dates as planning context, not a personal approval promise.
  • Calendar application, information-request and review deadlines separately.
  • Confirm the legal basis for work and residence before starting duties or travelling.

The October figures help reveal where delays may occur. They do not relax statutory eligibility or convert a pending application into permission. A complete file and a realistic start-date plan remain more useful than extrapolating a guaranteed decision day from the table.
