Georgia published amendments to its Law on the Legal Status of Aliens in April and June 2026. What should a foreign national do after a visa, residence or removal problem?
An immigration status can change quickly
Georgia’s Law on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons establishes legal guarantees for foreign nationals, movement and residence, while also addressing irregular migration. Matsne published further amendments on 15 April and 25 June 2026, so older online advice may be incomplete.
Visa refusal, visa cancellation, residence termination, removal and an entry ban are different legal outcomes. The deadline, authority, evidence and appeal route may differ for each.
Immediate steps
- Request the complete written decision, legal grounds and appeal instructions.
- Record the exact date of service and preserve the envelope, email or electronic notice.
- Request translation and legal assistance; do not let a language barrier cause a missed deadline.
- Prepare the passport, visa, residence card, border history, work or study documents and family evidence.
- If detention or immediate removal is possible, contact counsel and the consulate without delay.
An important protection
The law provides that a foreign national or stateless person must not be returned or expelled to a state where there is a risk of torture, inhuman or degrading treatment, or serious harm defined by the international-protection framework. This does not mean every removal stops automatically: the risk must be supported with facts, country evidence and a timely legal request.
Common mistakes include relying on verbal promises from an employer, landlord or agent, missing a residence deadline, or failing to preserve written communications. The outcome depends on nationality, status, the alleged breach, family ties and return risk.
