AI Deepfakes Enter a New Legal Era: What Protects People in Georgia?

EU transparency rules for deepfakes and public-interest AI text began applying on 2 August 2026. Here is what a similar incident may mean under Georgian law.

One video can be evidence — or an attack

Synthetic voice, face and video can now cause reputational, financial and personal-safety harm. Since 2 August 2026, the EU AI Act transparency rules require disclosure for deepfakes and, in defined cases, labelling of AI-generated public-interest text. They are not Georgian law, but Georgian businesses serving EU users may still face them.

If it happens in Georgia

Georgia’s Law on Personal Data Protection may be relevant when the material identifies a person or uses personal data. Civil-law remedies may also concern name, image, dignity, privacy, business reputation and compensation. If the material is used for fraud, threats, blackmail or another offence, criminal-law reporting may be appropriate.

First steps

  • Preserve the original URL, account name, timestamp, screenshots and sharing history.
  • Keep the original file and do not edit or delete it.
  • Notify the platform in writing and request removal and preservation of evidence.
  • Consider a personal-data complaint and obtain legal advice on civil remedies.
  • Call 112 if there is an immediate threat, extortion or safety risk.

Business compliance

Businesses should map where generative AI is used, establish consent and data-minimisation rules, require human review for public communications, and maintain an incident-response process. EU-facing activity may require a separate AI Act and GDPR assessment.
